Byproduct Recovery Center

 

The Port of Astoria is advancing its plans for a Byproduct Recovery Center (“BRC”) to support the seafood processing industry by enhancing environmental sustainability and compliance with modern regulations. The facility will be designed to receive process water and remove usable waste materials for potential reuse, such as fish oils and proteins. The center will implement state-of-the-art technology to improve both efficiency and environmental outcomes to ensure sustainable fisheries. This project represents a significant investment in the local economy and the long-term sustainability of the seafood industry, benefiting both the environment and regional stakeholders.

On August 20, 2024, the Port Commission approved a proposal that outlined SLR International’s completion of a Feasibility Study (“FS”) for a BRC to be located on Pier 2. Pursuant to and in tandem with that approval, the Port has contracted with Aqua-Terra Consultants (ATC) for a Treatability Study (“TS”) of the BRC. Whereas the FS will be focused on components such as constructability, production rates, wastewater flow, permitting, and the like, the TS is necessary for a holistic BRC evaluation. The TS will evaluate various treatment technologies to determine the most effective, sustainable, and environmentally friendly methods for utilizing seafood processing “wastewater” as a valuable resource.
